About the Curator

A creative life across film, music, art and public culture.

Umar John is a filmmaker, producer, musician, poet, entrepreneur and multidisciplinary artist whose work brings stories, artists and communities into public life. He is the Founder and Chairman of Hummingbird Art and Culture Foundation Ltd. and the founder of Hummingbird Film Studios Inc.

Across cinema, television, music, exhibitions and cultural initiatives, his practice is guided by a consistent belief: art should not remain confined to studios, private collections or screens. It should create encounters, open conversation and connect people across cultures.

For Beyond Words, Umar serves as curator and presenting producer, shaping the exhibition’s narrative, museum presentation, visual identity, public interpretation and collector experience around the integrity of Ayesha Kamal’s work.

Curatorial Approach

Preserve the work.
Reveal the world around it.

01

Artist First

The artist’s practice, materials and intentions remain the governing center of the exhibition.

02

Cultural Context

Islamic calligraphy is placed within its long visual history and its contemporary international life.

03

Public Encounter

Gallery interpretation, artist conversation and digital access invite audiences to look closely and ask questions.

04

Lasting Stewardship

Documentation, provenance and thoughtful acquisition carry the work beyond a single exhibition cycle.

The Exhibition

Beyond Words

The Sacred Art of Ayesha Kamal is conceived as more than a sequence of paintings. It is a progression from language to surface, private reflection to public museum space, and Lahore studio practice to a Washington, D.C. audience.

The accompanying Limited Collection creates a second mode of looking: viewers can compare scale, see each work within imagined architectural settings and begin a private collection inquiry without diminishing the museum experience.
